Are your feet freezing cold when you crawl under the covers? Have you ever worn socks to bed or placed a hot water bottle at the end of your bed? Researchers now have a good understanding of why warm feet can help you sleep and why wearing socks may help you fall asleep faster.

Why Sleep in Socks?

Our average core body temperature throughout the day is about 98.6°F (37°C), but it naturally drops at night. The ideal bedroom temperature for sleep is between 62–67°F (16–19°C), which helps your body regulate its temperature. While your body temperature drops, you don’t want your extremities to get too cold. Wearing socks keeps your feet warm, helps redistribute heat throughout your body, and can even help you fall asleep faster.

The Benefits of Wearing Socks to Bed

Wearing socks to bed can provide several sleep benefits:

  • Fall asleep faster.
  • Help regulate core body temperature, preventing night sweats.
  • Prevent your feet from turning numb or blue.
  • Reduce dryness or cracking caused by cold, dry weather.

The Downsides of Wearing Socks to Bed

Some people find socks uncomfortable or experience sweaty feet at night. However, there are no major health risks associated with wearing socks to bed.

Wear the Right Socks

To maximize comfort and avoid sweaty feet, choose the right socks for sleeping:

  • Lightweight and breathable to keep your feet warm and dry.
  • Made of natural materials, such as merino wool or cashmere, and not too thick.
  • Avoid compression socks.
  • Do not use heated socks, hot water bottles, or heated blankets, as these can cause overheating.
  • Wear clean socks, as daytime socks may be sweaty or less breathable.

Foot Care Before Bed

Warm your feet as part of your bedtime routine to help you fall asleep faster. A warm shower or bath can heat your feet while also signaling your body that it’s time to sleep. You can also soak your feet in warm water for a few minutes. Make sure to dry your feet thoroughly before putting on socks to prevent fungal infections.

Sock Alternatives

Socks aren’t the only way to keep your feet warm at night. You can try:

  • Wearing insulated slippers in the evening to warm your feet before bed.
  • Placing a hot water bottle at the foot of the bed temporarily and removing it before sleep.
  • Using an extra blanket over your feet at the beginning of the night, then removing it before you fall asleep.
